In a powerful display of compassion and cooperation, over 100 homeless dogs and cats were rescued from Puerto Rico and flown to New Jersey to begin new lives, thanks to a joint mission by The Sato Project and Wings of Rescue. According to People.com and reporter Kimberlee Speakman, the flight took place on April 26, transporting 110 animals rescued from what were described as “deplorable” conditions caused by Puerto Rico’s overwhelming stray population.
The operation started two days earlier, when 1,500 pounds of pet supplies were flown from Morristown, New Jersey, to San Juan. On the return leg, the rescue team brought the animals—previously living on streets or abandoned in desolate areas—back to the mainland in a specially outfitted aircraft with climate control and secure travel crates.
Puerto Rico is estimated to have more than 650,000 stray dogs, known locally as “satos.” Many suffer from hunger, disease, abuse, and even targeted violence. Playa Lucia, nicknamed Dead Dog Beach, is a frequent rescue location. Volunteers from The Sato Project routinely find injured and deceased animals there, nursing survivors back to health through medical care and rehabilitation.
Among the volunteers was actor and Wings of Rescue supporter David Chokachi, who called the mission “one of the most heartbreaking and rewarding experiences of my life.” Once the plane landed, families awaiting their new furry friends broke into cheers and tears, welcoming the animals with open arms.
These rescues are a lifeline. Since 2011, The Sato Project has saved over 8,000 dogs from Puerto Rico, while Wings of Rescue has flown 36 missions this year alone.
If you’re moved by these stories, consider adopting instead of shopping for pets, supporting rescue flights, or donating to animal rescue organisations. Every small step helps reduce suffering and build a more compassionate, sustainable world.
