In Southern California, over 100 neglected animals have been rescued from a property in Aguanga, following the devastation of the Nixon Fire, which ravaged more than 5,000 acres in Riverside County. The alarming discovery was made when a Riverside County sheriff’s deputy, while assisting with evacuations, noticed the deteriorating condition of the house and alerted the county’s Animal Services.
Upon inspection, Animal Services officials found a distressing scene with various animals living in poor conditions. The rescued animals included three horses, six goats, and numerous dogs, along with chickens, mice, parakeets, cockatiels, quail, geese, a turkey, and even pet cockroaches.
Animal Services Director Erin Gettis described the case as particularly unusual due to the diverse range of animals involved. Many of the animals were transported to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus for medical care and recovery. Among them, a miniature horse and a sheep, believed to be companions, were taken to a county shelter.
The property owner, who was not present during the seizure and did not respond to notices, may face felony animal cruelty charges as the Animal Services department prepares to submit evidence to the Riverside County District Attorney’s office.
