A disturbing case out of Oregon has once again highlighted the dangers of privately run roadside zoos that put profit over the welfare of animals. According to ABC News, the owner of the West Coast Game Park Safari in Bandon has been indicted on 371 charges, including more than 300 counts of animal neglect, after authorities discovered appalling conditions, drugs, and weapons on the property.

The investigation began in May when Oregon State Police served multiple search warrants at the zoo. What they found was shocking: methamphetamine, cocaine, dozens of firearms, and animals suffering from neglect. More than 300 creatures, including lions, camels, and smaller exotic species, had to be relocated to sanctuaries or rescue facilities. Tragically, some—including a camel, a chicken, and a kinkajou—were euthanized after veterinarians deemed their suffering too great.

This indictment exposes the dark reality behind facilities that often market themselves as family attractions or “safaris.” In truth, many operate with little oversight, leaving wildlife vulnerable to mistreatment. The case serves as a reminder that animals belong in the wild or reputable sanctuaries, not in roadside cages where their health, safety, and dignity are constantly at risk.

The fallout also reinforces the importance of shifting away from industries that exploit animals. Choosing plant-based lifestyles, supporting accredited sanctuaries, and rejecting businesses that commodify wildlife all send a clear message that cruelty is not entertainment. For the earth and our shared environment, the lesson is simple: exploitation—whether of animals, land, or ecosystems—always comes at a devastating cost.

As this case moves through the courts, the hundreds of animals already freed from neglect represent a glimmer of hope. By speaking up, choosing compassion, and aligning our choices with values of respect and care, we can help ensure that places like this no longer exist. Supporting sanctuaries and living vegan are powerful ways to stand on the side of justice for animals and the planet.
