The 2024 Paris Olympics have not only been a stage for extraordinary athletic performances but also a platform for athletes to advocate for pressing global issues such as environmental sustainability. Athletes from various disciplines have used their Olympic spotlight to promote awareness and action towards preserving our planet.

One standout athlete is Rayssa Leal, the Brazilian skateboarding prodigy. At just 16, Leal clinched a bronze medal in skateboarding while promoting environmental consciousness. Growing up near the Amazon rainforest, Leal has witnessed its degradation first-hand. In a unique collaboration with the International Olympic Committee for the Paris 2024 Games, Leal competed using a skateboard adorned with images of macaws, her favorite species from the Amazon. Leal expressed the critical connection between human health and nature preservation, emphasizing the importance of protecting air, water, and the environment.

Similarly, Alena Olsen from the USA Women’s Rugby Sevens team, which earned a historic bronze—the first for the USA in the sport—has been vocal about her environmental commitments. Known as an eco-athlete, Olsen’s passion for the environment was highlighted during matches by her parents who sported bee antennae in the stands as a tribute to her environmental advocacy. Earlier in the year, her team visited a local bee sanctuary, underscoring the crucial role bees play in our ecosystem.

Another influential voice at the Games was Imogen Grant, a gold medalist in women’s lightweight double sculls rowing for Great Britain. Grant, a vegan and sustainability ambassador, shared her insights on tackling Climate change, like how athletes approach their training: breaking down overwhelming challenges into manageable actions. She actively promotes cleaning up waterways and competes to raise awareness about the impact of extreme heat on athletes, linking it back to global climate patterns.

These athletes, among others, have been proactive about environmental issues even before the Paris Games began. In early July, a group of Olympic hopefuls penned an open letter to major corporate sponsors like Coca-Cola and PepsiCo, urging them to prioritize sustainability in future events. Their advocacy highlights a growing trend among athletes who are not only champions in their sports but also champions for the planet, urging global leaders and organizations to adopt more sustainable practices.
