Obesity is a disease that is not specific to humans, it can be found in animals, too. When Obie the Dachshund was rescued, he weighed 77 pounds. This is nearly three times his ideal weight. His previous guardian unknowingly overfed Obie, to the point where his small body couldn’t handle the weight he had gained. According to Obie’s Facebook page, arounds 54 percent of pets in the U.S. are overweight, although Obie is quite the extreme case.

Just like humans, obese animals can develop diabetes, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, and trouble breathing. Seeing the potential danger that Obie could face if he did not safely lose weight, his rescuers stepped up and put Obie on a strict regiment.

Here is Obi’s before picture …

Obi’s guardian writes that his weight loss was the product of a “simple common sense approach,” including proper diet, exercise, and regular visits to the vet.

Obie had two doggie brothers to help him along the way.

With a degree in Animal Science and experience with animal nutrition, Obie’s caretaker was very well qualified to help this little dachshund on his journey.

It took a year and a lot of patience for Obie to lose 40 pounds. But, his caretaker describes him as a fighter!

To celebrate the weight loss, Obie’s caretaker took him to the beach. What better place to debut his new bod!

His caretaker plans to continue Obie’s exercise regiment, incorporating swim therapy to keep this happy little guy on track.

Way to go Obie! We hope you continue having happy and healthy life!
