“Nose to Toes” Program to Provide Medical Care for the Pets of Homebound Seniors

SpokAnimal and Meals on Wheels Spokane has launched the “Nose to Toes” program to extend essential medical care to the pets of homebound seniors. Recognizing the challenges faced by seniors who are part of Meals on Wheels Spokane and unable to access regular veterinary services for their animals, this initiative aims to bridge the gap in pet healthcare.

Meals on Wheels Spokane, a longstanding program delivering hot and nutritious meals to homebound seniors since 1967, has teamed up with SpokAnimal to address the unique needs of pet owners among their recipients. Many seniors, restricted by mobility issues, find it difficult to bring their pets for routine wellness exams. The “Nose to Toes” program seeks to alleviate this burden by bringing basic medical care directly to their doorsteps.

SpokAnimal, in collaboration with Meals on Wheels volunteers, will travel to the homes of seniors enrolled in the program, offering a range of essential services for their pets. These services include nail trims, microchipping, wellness exams, and more. Importantly, the program aims to create a familiar and comfortable setting for both pets and their owners, as veterinarians conduct thorough wellness exams right in the seniors’ homes.

By combining resources and expertise, SpokAnimal and Meals on Wheels Spokane are not only addressing the physical well-being of the seniors’ pets but also contributing to the emotional and mental health of the humans. This unique partnership exemplifies the power of community collaboration, demonstrating how organizations can come together to create impactful solutions for those in need.
