BrucePac, an Oklahoma-based company, has issued a recall of almost 10 million pounds of its ready-to-eat meat and poultry products. The recall, announced by the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), comes after the discovery of potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a harmful bacteria that can lead to serious illness.
The FSIS revealed that 9,986,245 pounds of various BrucePac products are being recalled due to the risk of listeria contamination. The announcement, which was also shared on the FSIS’s social media accounts, explained that food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes poses a health risk, particularly to vulnerable populations such as older adults, people with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms of listeriosis, the infection caused by the bacteria, can include fever, muscle aches, headaches, stiff neck, and gastrointestinal issues. In severe cases, the infection can lead to confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions.
Though no illnesses linked to the contaminated products have been reported so far, the FSIS warned that the recalled meat and poultry items were distributed nationwide to restaurants and other institutions. The recall applies to products with establishment numbers “51205” or “P-51205.” These products were produced between June 19 and October 8 of this year.
The contamination was detected during routine testing conducted by FSIS, which confirmed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some of BrucePac’s ready-to-eat poultry products.
BrucePac, in a statement on its website, emphasized its commitment to food safety, stating, “Food safety always has been, and always will be, a top priority.” The FSIS advises that any potentially contaminated products should be discarded or returned to their place of purchase. Restaurants and other establishments that have these items in their inventory are also urged not to serve them.
