In an ideal world, dogs would never fall into the wrong hands. They would only be cared for by loving owners who keep a safe and sanitary home, always provide enough food and water, and care for their needs almost as much as their own, if not more. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. As we see, time and time again, dogs can go days, months and even years in horrible conditions. We’ve seen dogs trapped in disgusting homes, be tethered to a house and forced to a life of boredom, and sometimes simply abandoned. And sometimes, as well-intentioned as a guardian may be, if they are leading a dangerous and unsafe lifestyle, they are putting their dogs at risk simply by keeping them.
Take Bubba, a Jack Russell Terrier-Chihuahua mix, who was found high on methamphetamine in a drug-infested motel room a few months ago, listless and on the brink of death. Clearly not the purchaser of these illegal drugs, the pup was taken by the local Animal Control, and his owner was arrested on an outstanding warrant and suspicion of possession of methamphetamine, heroin, and drug paraphernalia.
Once the Animal Control team of Orange County, California took Bubba in, they noticed that he had a very unsteady stance and seemed to have neurological issues.
After some tests, they deduced that the pup was, in fact, high on meth.
Bubba was immediately put into treatment where he was given a lot of fluids. Eventually, he started eating regular food and showing other signs of improvement.
Four months later, and Bubba has been declared clean! There are now zero traces of methamphetamine in his system.
It seems the OC Animal Control team got to him early enough because doctors have declared that Bubba has made a full recovery and is not expected to have any future medical problems because of her short-lived addiction.
The most amazing thing about all of this, is despite the trauma that Bubba must have endured during rehabilitation, he is still as rambunctious and playful as you would expect any seven-month-old pup to be.
He loves belly rubs…
…he loves to play fetch…
and he’s clearly loving all of the attention!
Bubba has now been adopted by some kind folks who are very excited to give Bubba fresh start in life…
Bubba has not had the easiest life until now but he is very lucky that he was found relatively quickly. Who knows how much longer he would have been able to survive under the negligent “care” of his former owner. Bubba is the perfect example of how similar dogs are to children. They are very much dependent on us and the habits they pick up are directly correlated with the habits of their guardians. If Bubba was able to survive this terrible situation, we are sure he will thrive with his new owners. Best of luck, Bubba!
