After 18 years of forecasting weather and educating the public about Climate change, renowned Iowa meteorologist Chris Gloninger has decided to step down from his role. Gloninger, who served as the chief meteorologist for CBS affiliate KCCI in Des Moines, made the difficult decision following a series of harassment and a death threat related to his climate coverage.

In his distinguished career, Gloninger has worked at seven news stations across five states, effectively using his platform to highlight the intersection between weather patterns and Climate change. The Emmy-award winning meteorologist is known for creating Boston’s first climate change series and producing broadcast specials that underscore the far-reaching impacts of Climate change on daily life.
Regrettably, this commitment to raising awareness sparked a backlash that escalated into threats, beginning in June 2022. The threatening emails, full of vitriol, left Gloninger emotionally drained and struggling with PTSD. Even though police identified and fined the man responsible, the emotional toll was too high.
Despite the distressing circumstances, Gloninger remains committed to combating the climate crisis. In his resignation announcement on Twitter, he expressed the need to focus on his health, family, and continue fighting the climate crisis, albeit in a different way. Gloninger plans to devote his full-time efforts towards finding sustainable solutions and fostering positive change, shifting from broadcasting to activism.
Ending an 18-year dream career was not an easy decision, Gloninger admits, but he remains hopeful for the future. Even though he is stepping away from broadcast news, Gloninger’s commitment to the Climate change narrative remains unshaken, and his next chapter promises to be just as impactful, if not more so, as he continues to inspire change in a warming world.
