The energy shock that nobody wanted has arrived. According to The Guardian, the ongoing war in Iran has triggered what the International Energy Agency calls the greatest global energy security challenge in history. Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz disrupted roughly 20 percent of the world’s oil and a significant share of liquefied natural gas. Asia, which buys more than 80 percent of the fuel that flows through that narrow waterway, is now scrambling to keep the lights on.
The immediate response has been a troubling one. Japan lifted caps on coal power generation, including older and less efficient plants, effective April 2026. South Korea removed its 80 percent operating limit on coal fired generation. Thailand restarted coal plants that had only recently been decommissioned. According to Bloomberg, coal has received its most significant boost in years, with climate negotiators having spent decades trying to phase it out entirely.
This is a gut punch for the environment. Coal is the dirtiest major fuel on earth. Returning to it now, even as a short term fix, risks reversing real progress on carbon reduction and wildlife habitat protection in regions already straining under the pressures of a warming planet. The health consequences for communities near coal plants are just as real as the climate ones.
There is one thread of hope. According to Fortune, the supply shock may accelerate EV adoption and nuclear restarts faster than years of climate policy managed. Higher oil prices are pushing consumers toward plant forward lifestyles and electric transport. Crisis can drive transformation, but only if we push for it.
This is the moment to Support clean energy loudly and relentlessly. The ecosystem cannot wait for geopolitics to sort itself out.
