In the U.S., the thought of eating dog is absolutely abhorrent. Dogs are friends and loyal companions, certainly not food. This is not the case everywhere, however. In countries like China, Korea, Vietnam and many other east Asian countries, millions upon millions of dogs are brutally butchered to be sold as meat. Although attitudes towards consuming dog are beginning to change in many of these places, the reality is that the demand still exists and fuels the continuation of this practice.
In South Korea, the Humane Society International (HSI) is working to put an end to the dog meat trade. By helping to educate the public about the health concerns associated with consuming dog meat in addition to empowering dog meat farmers to transition out of the trade, HSI’s work is slowly but surely turning tides.
In this video, we see dogs that look like our own loving family pets being rescued from deplorable conditions and offered a chance at a better life. Over 130 dogs were saved from this single farm as part of an agreement that HSI coordinated with the facility’s owner, Mr. Kim. Thanks to the help of this amazing organization, Kim will take up rice farming instead, and all of the dogs will be given the chance to find a loving forever home.
Kim told HSI, “As a dog lover, I hope to see more dogs getting adopted to families. In the future, I hope other farmers will be given this opportunity where they can change to different businesses.”
It truly is wonderful to see such a happy ending for all parties involved in this rescue. Hopefully, this rescue mission is one of many more to come as a result of the amazing efforts of HSI and other organizations.
