The Humane Society of Delaware County in Ohio is investigating a disturbing case of animal abuse and potential cockfighting at a residence in Sunbury. Following complaints from neighbors, society staff and Delaware County Sheriff’s deputies executed a search warrant at 9442 Todd Street Road.
The investigation began when a complaint was received about an injured dog on the property. Upon gaining access, the society’s investigator discovered several dogs in need of veterinary care and other concerning signs, including evidence suggestive of cockfighting, according to Jana Cassidy, the executive director of the Humane Society.
The human in charge of the animals, who has not been charged, voluntarily surrendered 90 animals. This included nine dogs, six rabbits, and various birds such as chickens, ducks, turkeys, doves, and parakeets. The property, spanning 11 acres, is owned by Efrain and Maria Quezada but was being leased to a self-employed construction worker.
Cassidy emphasized the necessity for all animals to have food, water, and shelter. While some animals were receiving care, many were breeding without any control. The Delaware County Dog Warden and a team of volunteers, including Ted and Jackie Colflesh, have since housed the rescued animals.
