Valentine’s Day is synonymous with the exchange of roses, a symbol of love and affection cherished worldwide. However, the future of this Valentine’s Day staple is under threat from an unexpected source: Climate change. As global temperatures rise, the conditions for growing these beloved blooms are becoming increasingly challenging, posing a significant risk to the rose industry both in the UK and globally.

Roses thrive in temperatures between 15-24°C, requiring at least six hours of sunlight daily and ample water to flourish. Yet, climate change is leading to more frequent droughts and altering rain patterns and growing seasons, making it difficult for roses to thrive. A report by Christian Aid highlights the plight faced by rose growers in five key exporting countries—Kenya, Colombia, Ethiopia, Uganda, and Ecuador—which together account for 59% of the world’s exported roses. These regions are grappling with rising temperatures, droughts, and water scarcity due to melting glaciers, jeopardizing the commercial rose industry.
In fact, over 250 million roses are sold globally each Valentine’s Day, highlighting the industry’s significance.
In the UK, Climate change is causing roses to bloom earlier and increasing the prevalence of fungal diseases like black spots, which mar the beauty of these flowers. Experts from Kew Gardens and industry insiders echo the concerns, noting the impact of Climate change on rose cultivation, including heat stress, reduced flower quality, and disrupted flowering seasons.
Biodiversity is crucial not only for maintaining healthy ecosystems but also for ensuring the resilience of rose varieties against Climate change
Efforts to mitigate these effects include tracking different rose and pollinator species and taking global action to address Climate change. This could help protect growing regions, secure jobs, and promote sustainable growing practices. However, the challenges are vast, with increased disease and pest pressures reported by growers like Patrick Mbugua from Wildfire Flowers in Kenya, highlighting the urgent need for adaptation and mitigation strategies.
The environmental impact of rose cultivation, from greenhouse gas emissions associated with heated greenhouses in the Netherlands to air transport and refrigeration for roses grown in warmer climates, further complicates the issue. In response, some retailers are rethinking their Valentine’s Day offerings to reduce waste and environmental impact, reflecting changing consumer preferences and the need for more sustainable practices.
As the threat of Climate change looms over the rose industry, it’s clear that more needs to be done to protect these symbols of love. From adopting renewable energy sources to investing in climate finance for vulnerable countries, urgent action is needed to ensure that roses continue to bring joy and Support livelihoods around the world.

Food is always somewhat about love but on Valentine’s Day, pull out all the stops. Anyone can make reservations at a restaurant but preparing a meal for someone is a thoughtful and precious gift.
