A TikTok video is going viral after telling the story of a dog rescued from a high-kill shelter. The story highlights the importance of adoption, particularly now as many shelters are experiencing record-high numbers of surrendered and abandoned animals.

The video tells the story of Zoey, who was abandoned on the side of a highway. Luckily, a kind person who saw her being left scooped her up and took her to a nearby shelter. Unluckily, the shelter was a high-kill shelter. However, soon after Zoey was brought to the shelter, something amazing happened.

Kelsey McDonough felt drawn to go to the shelter, despite feeling anxious. Soon after arriving, she was drawn to Zoey. Immediately, the two had a connection. So, Kelsey decided to adopt her. Now, Zoey has a loving forever home!

Although Zoey’s story has a happy ending, not all animals are so lucky. Roughly 920,000 animals are euthanized at shelters across the United States every year. Adoption and education are key to reducing these numbers.
