Harrods to Close Pet Department After Nearly 100 Years of Business

Harrods department store is arguably one of the most famous (and largest) in the United Kingdom. In addition to selling designer fare such as high-end dresses, the department store has had an unusual exotic selection as well. Starting in 1917, if you had the money, you could purchase nearly any animal you so desired from Harrods’ Pet Kingdom.

Undoubtedly, the store had its critics from the beginning. According to The Telegraph, such extravagant purchases included a tiger cub, an alligator, and “in 1967 a baby elephant called Gertie was ordered from there by Ronald Regan, the then governor of California and future President, who wanted one for a Republican party rally.”

After the 1976 Endangered Species Act, the store no longer sold exotic animals, but instead stuck with dogs, cats, and other small and furry companion animals. While this was a step in the right direction, adopting a companion animal is still the best option than buying one from a store.

But now, after nearly 100 years of business, we’re excited to bring you the news that Harrods will finally be closing its Pet Kingdom to make room for an expanded womenswear section!

While some customers will miss their experiences in the Pet Kingdom, there are so many great animal rescues and sanctuaries out there that we’re sure the disappointment will be short-lived.

Kudos to Harrods for consistently improving their view on selling animals over the years, and for their final decision to leave it in the past!
