Getting to see marine animals up close is undoubtedly the dream of every diver. Going below the surface of the ocean, or any body of water for that matter, offers the chance to experience a world entirely different from our own and meet creatures we could never see on land. Of course, we’ve all read about marine animals and seen photos, but having one swim up to you to personally say hello, now that’s something!
The diver in this video has the experience of a lifetime when an affectionate manatee floats on over to check her out. Rebecca Ziegler was not expecting to even see manatees when she set out for a dip in Crystal River, Florida, but stumbled across possibly the world’s most friendly sea cow.
Like a good aquatic host, the manatee welcomes Ziegler to his underwater home and offers a fin to shake then abandons all formality and swoops in for a hug. Seeing that manatee populations are greatly threatened by ship strikes and habitat loss, this loving manatee serves as the perfect ambassador for this species.

Manatees in Crystal River have become too tame for their own good. I love One Green Planet, but this video represents part of the problem. Beyond the appearance that from :39 on the swimmer is inside the sanctuary, the swimmer reaching out to stroke the manatee is not passive observation and is contrary to USFWS recommendation to practice passive observation and observe from a distance and the FWC recommendation to look but don\’t touch. Manatees that are too used to people end up in harms way and the most recent mortality stats for Citrus County seem to support this. Manatees are tactile animals and petting is simply providing a stimulus to condition them to approach humans. Let wild animals be wild.
