France Fights Rapid Climate Change with “Mosaic Forests”

To try and combat rapid Climate change, France is trying a unique strategy. Called a “mosaic forest”, they are attempting to diversify existing forests. By introducing many different tree species, they hope to make the forests more resilient. Additionally, officials are hoping that this strategy will help absorb the thermal shock of a rapidly warming world. Globally, forests are disappearing at an alarming rate, despite their extreme importance for a healthy planet.

Forested areas are key in helping to fight climate change. This is because trees absorb and sequester carbon, keeping it out of the atmosphere. Additionally, they purify the air and produce oxygen. The strong root systems of trees can also help to anchor the earth in place, preventing devastating natural catastrophes such as mudslides. Forests also make up unique ecosystems. Without them, we run the risk of many animal species becoming extinct.

To diversify forests, France will introduce different species to areas outside their normal range. So, for example, they will move some southern species into more northern areas, and northern species into more southern areas. This will create a mosaic pattern throughout the forest, hopefully helping to protect it from the worst impacts of Climate change. Diversifying species makes it less likely that massive areas of the forest will die at once due to heat stress, drought, or other ramifications of a warming world. Additionally, planting certain trees, such as oaks, helps preserve some of France’s unique heritage. The solution is already being implemented in the Moulière state forest

The strategy is currently in its first stage, with several others to follow. The first stage focuses on planting different tree types in different plots. Next will come the “migration aid” stage, where officials will try to introduce resilient trees to an area. They hope that this careful strategy of forest management will help allow the woods to continue to thrive.
