Statistically speaking, the likelihood of an animal getting adopted from a shelter is quite slim even when they’re young and healthy. In the U.S., it is estimated that only six to eight million of the 70 million homeless dogs and cats roaming the streets ever get brought into shelters. Of those, only around half actually end up getting adopted. When you tack on old age or a preexisting medical condition in addition to these odds, the chance of adoption drops from slim to almost nonexistent.
Hunter is a puppy who came to a shelter with a “preexisting condition.” He was born into a foster home, coordinated by Eleven Eleven Animal Rescue, a week and a half after his mother was rescued from the streets. Poor Hunter was born with a deformed right leg that became injured due his mother’s persistent cleaning. This injury and a missing leg made him unable to scuffle with his siblings for milk meaning if he was going to have a chance at survival, he had to be hand-raised.
When his foster mom took him home, Hunter barely weighed a pound and he was severely malnourished. He needed to be bottle fed every few hours and given subcutaneous fluid under his skin.
As time went on, Hunter grew larger and more lively. In fact, by the tenth week Hunter was a lively, happy 19 pound puppy! Now, Hunter’s living a new life with a forever, but he couldn’t of gotten through it without the help of his fosters!
