Taking care of rescued wildlife can be bittersweet. Rescuers spend months or years rehabilitating and bonding with the animals in their care all the while knowing that the animal will eventually go back into the wild. But even though letting go of an animal you’ve come to love can be difficult, seeing them thrive in their wild environment is a powerful rewarding feeling that trumps everything else.
The kind people at David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT) understand this feeling all too well. This amazing organization specializes in rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned baby elephants, many of whom have lost their parents to the illegal ivory trade. Around one elephant is killed every 15 minutes of their ivory, so DSWT’s work is incredibly important. In this video, we see one of the many success stories that DSWT has made possible.
Sweet Sally is an ex-orphan who DSWT helped raise and release back into the wild. Now, Sally has given birth to a calf named Safi which is Swahili for “unblemished” – it’s a totally fitting name as the little guy is perfect in every way!
Safi’s birth represents more than just sentimental value for DSWT, it shows that there is hope for a bright future for Africa’s elephants.
