Flu is ripping through New York right now, and you can feel it on trains, in offices, and in schools. According to Joseph Goldstein of The New York Times, New York City logged 9,857 emergency room visits for influenza like illness in the week ending December 20.
Statewide numbers look just as stark. The New York State Department of Health reported 71,123 positive flu cases for that same week, plus 189,312 cases so far this season. Goldstein also reported 32,239 laboratory reported flu cases in New York City last week, and more than half were children.
This season started early, and officials expect more spread after the holidays. The CDC notes that flu activity can ramp up fast, and the agency estimates that 3 to 11 percent of people get sick with flu in a typical season. Some of what is circulating now is A H3N2, and a Pan American Health Organization alert says the subclade K version has mutations that may weaken the vaccine match.
Still, the same alert points to early evidence that vaccination can reduce the risk of hospitalization, especially for kids, even in a mismatch year.
So what helps today? Get vaccinated if you have not yet, and help kids and older relatives do the same. If you feel sick, stay home, and consider a mask in crowded indoor spaces. Also, open windows when you can, because cleaner indoor air supports health and lowers spread. If you are at higher risk, ask a clinician about antivirals early.
Finally, prevention is not just personal. Paid sick leave and well funded clinics keep people safer, and they cut waste and stress on the environment too. Over time, shifting more meals toward plant based options can reduce Pollution from industrial farming and ease pressure on animals and the wider Earth.
