What do you do when two bear cubs, minutes from drowning, try to climb on board your fishing boat? Give them a helping hand, of course! That’s exactly what two kind-hearted fishermen did last month while out at Lake Vygozero in the Karelia region of Russia. The two baby bears had been trying to cross the lake alongside their mother but couldn’t quite keep up. Apparently, mama bear didn’t realize it was too much for them and the babies were left to fend for themselves.
These two fishermen were definitely at the right place at the right time. The bear cubs would have surely died without their brave actions.
The best part of the video footage is hearing the men’s comforting and compassionate words, trying to ease the cub’s despair. One man tells them to “take a rest, little one, take a rest.” In response to his friend’s question about what if they bite, the other fisherman says “no, he won’t, he’s just clinging on for his life … we need to help him, to hold his bum.”
While it may seem like an easy act of kindness, it’s important to remember – babies or not – they are still wild animals. There were several dangers including their sharp claws, fearfulness, and even what their mother might do if she saw the men with her babies, not knowing they were trying to help.
These incredible gentlemen even helped the exhausted babies into the forest once they reached the island they believed the mother went. Talk about heroes! Let’s all hope that the cub’s mother found them and they are all safe and recovering together.

What would have been the choice for them? Either help them or let them drown and I know that I would not choose the latter. I am glad they did not either.
