Believe it or not, you might want to skip rinsing the toothpaste out of your mouth after brushing your teeth to get the full benefits of fluoride. According to a piece in CNET by Katie Teague, she discovered after watching a dentist’s video on TikTok that rinsing your mouth with water after brushing your teeth is not very effective. She began to simply spit out as much toothpaste as she could without swishing water so that the toothpaste could sit for a little longer. However, she still did not exactly understand why. That’s when she decided to speak with Dr. Edmond Hewlett, consumer advisor for the American Dental Association and professor at UCLA School of Dentistry.

According to Dr. Hewlett, it’s important to skip rinsing with water after brushing your teeth because fluoride helps make the enamel harder and more resistant to acids that cause cavities. He says that it is the most well-established effective ingredient in toothpaste, so you should always be sure yours has that ingredient in it.

“When you measure a person’s fluoride levels in saliva, if they don’t rinse, there’s more fluoride,” Hewlett said.

When brushing your teeth, you are essentially cleaning off film and bacteria from food and drinks, and skipping rinsing will leave the fluoride in your mouth and give the fluoride a better effect on your teeth. Dr. Hewlett recommends waiting at least 15 minutes to drink water after brushing. Your saliva will clear the toothpaste out so that you don’t taste it all day.

“If you typically don’t get cavities, then you should continue using fluoride toothpaste. The decision to rinse or not to rinse after brushing probably won’t make a difference,” Dr. Hewlett said.

However, Dr. Hewlett says that if you have not been doing this, there’s no reason to fret. As long as you brush two times a day for two minutes each time, the fluoride will protect your teeth. For those who struggle with cavities, not rinsing may be a good idea.
