In the first half of January 2025, Europe has intensified its purchase of Russian naturalgas, setting a new record for imports despite the ongoing war in Ukraine and global sanctions aimed at curtailing Moscow’s war chest. According to data from Kpler, analyzed by POLITICO, the European Union imported a staggering 837,300 metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Russia, marking a significant increase from the previous year’s 760,100 tons.
This surge in imports comes right after a critical transit agreement with Ukraine expired at the start of the year, compelling European nations to rely more on LNG delivered by tankers from Russian ports. The cessation of the Ukraine route has heightened tensions, particularly among Eastern European nations like Slovakia and Hungary, which heavily depended on this path for their energy needs.
Despite various measures to reduce dependency on Russian energy, Europe’s attempts seem insufficient as the continent continues to engage in long-term contracts, with most of the Russian LNG stemming from the vast Yamal plant in northern Siberia. Anna-Kaisa Itkonen, a spokesperson for the European Commission, confirmed the situation, stating that efforts to eliminate Moscow’s influence on Europe’s energy system are ongoing but gas imports from Russia, including LNG, rose significantly in 2024.
Amidst these developments, several EU countries are advocating for stricter sanctions on Russian LNG, proposing a ban on its import to cut off a vital revenue stream that Moscow uses to fund its military actions in Ukraine. Additionally, with the upcoming U.S. presidency, there is a push for Europe to diversify its energy sources, including increasing imports of American LNG to reduce reliance on Russian energy.
As citizens of the world, it is crucial for us to understand the implications of these energy transactions on global politics and the environment. We must advocate for responsible energy consumption and Support policies that promote sustainable and ethical energy sources. Your voice matters—reach out to your representatives and demand a shift towards greener, more sustainable energy practices. Let’s work together to ensure a safer and more sustainable future for all.
