Many people find horse-drawn carriages to be romantic and charming, but they fail to think about what life for the horses is like. Horses are highly-sensitive creatures who can easily become spooked even in rural areas, let alone in chaotic urban areas bustling with speeding traffic and pedestrians. There is a never-ending list of incidents of horse-drawn carriage accidents that have resulted in serious injury or death to both horses and people, yet the practice is still widespread.
In Chicago in particular, horses have been seen working twelve-hour days, which is far longer than what the law permits. These long, arduous hours pulling massive carriages on hard pavement regularly results in back, joint, and hoof injuries, and once these horses are no longer strong enough to pull carriages, their future is even more bleak.
Recognizing the serious problems surrounding horse-drawn carriages, Barcelona recently banned the practice, and now animal activists want Chicago to do the same. If you would like to see the Windy City take a stand against horse-drawn carriages and be a leading example to the rest of the world, please take a moment to sign this petition to ban horse-drawn carriages in Chicago.
Many people still view a horse-drawn carriage like a whimsical fairytale, so please make sure to share this with your network and spread the truth about these rides.
