A TikTok video posted by a veterinary nurse warns viewers about an unusual symptom of brain damage in dogs, flapping ears. In the video, posted by @charlie.vet.nurse, a Pyrenees dog can be seen lying in a vet’s office. The dog’s ears are twitching rapidly, appearing to blow in a nonexistent wind. Text overlay on the video describes the dog’s symptoms, which include the odd ear movements and lethargy.

The next video from the account reveals the terrifying diagnosis. The dog was suffering from babesia gibsoni, which was causing the ears to move. The protozoans causing the disease were causing red blood cells to rupture, leading to swelling of the capillaries. Due to the loss of blood flow, some of the dog’s brain tissue was dying. This led to the ear movements. Luckily, the condition can be treated if it is caught early! The vet nurse reminded viewers to seek treatment if their dog displayed similar symptoms.
@charlie.vet.nurse Replying to @Ashley Marrama babesia gibsoni is correct and causing this patient’s bilateral focal auricular dyskinesia. Don’t worry! Our quick and thorough work-up meant we could start Atovaquone & Azithromycin ASAP. #ervettech #vetnurse #vettech #vettok #vetmed #babesiagibsoni #babesia
