Duck! Oh, I mean, look out! There’s a duck!
All jokes aside, these little ducklings are confronting their first real life problem without mom: The first fledge from the nest. Fledging is a big deal for little birds. They have to put fear aside, trust their instincts, and be prepared for the long fall to the soft-but-still-scary leaves below. If they don’t jump, they get left behind by their mother and siblings, and they miss out on all that great learning to swim stuff. These ducks could actually teach us a pretty important life lesson.
As great 19th-century philosopher, David Hume said, “Reason is, and ought only to be, the slave of the passions.” These little ducklings are trusting their natural instincts, which are pretty similar to our emotions. Rather than over-rationalizing that long drop to the ground — how scary it is, whether the leaves will actually be soft — we should let our passions take over and hope for the best. Though a dose of rationality is always helpful, these ducklings understand that too much rationality and not enough faith would mean missing out on all the great things that life has to offer!
