Among all the domestic animals that we call our friends, we know that there’s something different about dogs. Humans and dogs have been living side by side for the past 10,000 years. We’ve helped each other survive and provided each other with warmth, loyalty, and companionship in return. Even when we hit rough patches in our lives, we can count on our canine companions to greet us with unconditional love and showers of slobbery dog kisses. It’s for that reason that dogs are known as the proverbial “man’s best friend.”
Unfortunately, not all humans understand what a precious thing our relationship with dogs is, and as a result, many dogs are abused and abandoned for no reason other than the fact that they’re completely at the mercy of their caretaker. But no matter what hardships dogs may face at the hands of cruel humans, with patience and understanding from rescuers, dogs always seem to bounce right back, like Prince, the puppy in the video.
Prince lost his forever home when his caretaker abandoned him because of his beautiful black fur. Not long after being abandoned, this young pup was hit by a car. His pitiful cries were what lead a passerby to contact the local shelter and soon, Prince ended up in the care of people who wanted to help him. As you can see in the video, Prince has made major strides from the injured, frightened puppy who cowered under the table.
The vilification of animal companions with black fur may sound like an outdated superstition, but in recent years the phenomenon has gained so much attention that it finally has a name: Black Dog Syndrome. Due to long-standing prejudices created by myths and folklore such as black cats being associated with witchcraft or black dogs being seen as an omen of death, our dark furry friends wait longer to be adopted in shelters.
