Most people assume over-the-counter medications are harmless—after all, they’re sold without a prescription. But that doesn’t mean they’re risk-free. A growing number of doctors are sounding the alarm over one particular ingredient found in popular allergy meds and sleep aids that may increase the risk of dementia with long-term use.

According to Parade, doxylamine succinate—a first-generation antihistamine used in products like Unisom and Benadryl—can lead to short-term side effects like drowsiness and dizziness. But it’s the long-term risks that are raising red flags. Dr. Duyen Nguyen, DO, says repeated use over time can cause memory loss, cognitive decline, and even dementia. The concern is especially high in older adults, whose brains are more vulnerable.

These drugs work by blocking acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter critical for learning and memory. A 2015 study in JAMA Internal Medicine linked heavy cumulative use of anticholinergic drugs to increased dementia risk. “They may help you sleep,” explains Dr. Chris Allen, MD, “but they disrupt the brain’s natural sleep cycle and may affect long-term brain health.”

Luckily, safer alternatives exist. For allergies, newer antihistamines like loratadine (Claritin) and fexofenadine (Allegra) are less likely to cross the blood-brain barrier and come with fewer side effects. For sleep, options like cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) and good sleep hygiene are considered safer and more effective long-term.

Occasional use of doxylamine might be fine for healthy adults, but doctors urge caution, especially for the elderly. Speak to your healthcare provider before making it a regular part of your routine.

Let’s choose brain-friendly options that Support animal-free, cruelty-free brands and avoid unnecessary chemical use. Consider natural sleep aids, plant-based alternatives, and lifestyle changes instead of relying on pills—our minds and the planet will thank us.
