Most likely abandoned by his owners, Schildi the tortoise arrived at a Baden, Germany veterinary clinic with severe leg injuries.
“He was in pretty bad shape when they brought him to us. The lower part of his front leg was missing, and the upper part was very bad, with bone showing, and maggots in necrotic flesh,” said Dr. Panagiotis Azmanis of Bird Consulting International to The Local.
After he was treated and his leg was amputated, vets fitted him with a double wheel, but found it was difficult for him to turn corners.
Dr. Azmanis thought a bit outside of the box and came up with a LEGO wheel solution. He dug up wheels and spacer blocks from the toy box of the practice manager’s daughter, reports The Local.
The single LEGO wheel was fitted to the underside of Schildi with some surgical glue and has since proven to be a successful prosthetic leg.
Schildi is now back at an animal shelter with his new wheel, moving around freely and living happily.
Watch Schildi walk and roll on his new LEGO wheel below!
