When a diabetic dog named Ace’s former family moved, they surrendered him to the Associated Humane Popcorn Park Shelter in New Jersey. Sadly, this was the beginning of a long stay for the American Staffordshire Terrier.
Ace faces two big hurdles. First, his medical needs are often a deterrent to potential adopters. The diabetic dog does require insulin to manage his disease. However, Ace is great about calmly receiving treatment. Medication costs can be drastically reduced with pet insurance, or by working with a veterinary provider who offers affordable health care options. However, Ace’s breed is another hurdle the sweet pup must overcome. Sadly, American Staffordshire Terriers often face prejudice due to stereotyping and breed bans.
Although Ace has been at the shelter for more than 27 months (that’s over two years!) neither the diabetic dog nor the shelter staff has given up hope that he will one day find his forever home. Although he can not go to a home with cats, he may do okay with another dog of the same size. For those who may not be able to adopt, Ace is also available to foster! As a foster dog, the shelter will cover his medical costs. However, a foster home could make a world of difference for Ace’s well-being. Foster homes reduce stress for shelter dogs and offer them the practice of living with a family. Ultimately, this allows their true nature to shine and can help them get adopted!
