A recent listeria outbreak has tragically resulted in 12 deaths and 38 reported illnesses across 21 states, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The source of the contamination has been traced to frozen supplemental shakes manufactured by Prairie Farms Dairy Inc. in Fort Wayne, Indiana, and distributed under the brands Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial. These products were primarily supplied to hospitals and long-term care facilities.

Upon discovering the link, both Lyons Magnus and Sysco promptly initiated recalls and ceased distribution from the implicated facility. The FDA’s ongoing investigation has revealed that the outbreak strain of Listeria monocytogenes was present in environmental samples collected from the production site.

This outbreak, which began in 2018, has disproportionately affected vulnerable populations, including residents of long-term care facilities. Listeria infections can cause severe illness, especially in older adults, pregnant individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. Symptoms range from fever and muscle aches to more severe neurological complications. The FDA advises consumers and institutions to discard any recalled products and thoroughly clean any surfaces that may have come into contact with them to prevent further contamination.

In light of this incident, it’s crucial to recognize the impact of our dietary choices on health and well-being. Embracing a plant-based diet not only supports personal health but also promotes food safety and environmental sustainability. By choosing fresh, whole foods and reducing reliance on processed products, we can contribute to a safer and more compassionate food system.
