A contagious virus has been detected in a dog at a Las Vegas-area shelter, causing concern among pet owners and animal shelters. According to a post by the Animal Foundation, a dog tested positive for Canine distemper on February 27, 2025. The infected dog was initially found in the 89101 area of Las Vegas, and the shelter is now taking precautions to protect its more than 600 residents from the potentially fatal virus.
Canine distemper is a highly contagious disease that can impact a dog’s respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. It spreads through the air, direct contact, and contaminated surfaces, making it particularly concerning in environments like shelters. The virus causes a range of symptoms, including fever, coughing, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, and even paralysis. Although the shelter vaccinates all incoming animals, it notes that the vaccine can take weeks to fully protect dogs from the virus.
The shelter has enacted a series of preventive measures, including isolating symptomatic dogs, testing and monitoring those that have been exposed, and informing adopters and rescues who have taken in potentially affected animals. The Animal Foundation is urging pet owners to ensure their dogs are up to date on vaccinations to protect against distemper and other diseases.
With the outbreak raising awareness about the importance of vaccinations, this serves as a reminder for all pet owners to stay vigilant in safeguarding their animals. Regular vet visits and up-to-date vaccinations are crucial to preventing the spread of diseases like Canine distemper and ensuring our furry friends stay healthy.
