Bogota, Colombia

In an exciting turn for environmental advocacy, Colombia is setting the stage to center nature in the upcoming global environmental discourse. As the host for the Cop16 summit in October, Colombia aims to embed nature deeply within the international environmental agenda. Susana Muhamad, the anticipated Cop16 president and Colombia’s environment minister, has expressed the country’s commitment to spotlight nature as a crucial element in combating the climate crisis and preparing for the climate COP30 in 2025 in the Brazilian Amazon.

Underlining the intrinsic link between Climate change and biodiversity, Muhamad emphasizes that while nature is not the sole solution to climate issues, it stands as a pivotal foundation for future discussions. Colombia’s strategy involves focusing on actionable, impactful measures like the Conservation of the Amazon and the establishment of multinational marine protected areas, showcasing tangible efforts towards climate and biodiversity benefits.

The choice of Cali as the venue for this landmark summit underscores Colombia’s dedication to addressing the urgent need to halt biodiversity loss, a commitment that was galvanized by a historic UN agreement in Montreal, Canada, at the end of 2022. This global gathering will see nations presenting plans to achieve ambitious biodiversity targets, including the protection and restoration of 30% of the Earth’s land and sea areas.

Colombia’s leadership extends beyond hosting duties. President Gustavo Petro has positioned the country as a vocal advocate for environmental sustainability on the world stage, including supporting a fossil fuel nonproliferation treaty. This move not only highlights Colombia’s environmental foresight but also its vision of leveraging biodiversity as a cornerstone of economic resilience in a post-green transition era.

As the world gears up for Cop16, the spotlight on Colombia offers a hopeful glimpse into a future where nature is revered and protected, not just for its inherent value but as a key to addressing some of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time. With international focus also on Brazil’s G20 presidency and the climate COP29 in Azerbaijan, 2024 is poised to be a pivotal year for environmental action, underscoring the critical need for political leadership in safeguarding our planet’s biodiversity and ecosystems.
