When you read a book to a child for the first time, you can almost see the little wheels in their brain start to turn as their eyes light up with excitement. We all have fond memories of snuggling up on the couch and listening to stories featuring our favorite characters. We learned invaluable lessons from reading those brightly colored books. These important life lessons that still carry over into our current daily lives – but there is one lesson that perhaps we missed by reading books as kids. Where do books come from? And what is the environmental cost of their creation?
Now this lesson might seem a little heavy for young children, but it is an important one, especially in today’s world. Everything we use, even a little children’s book, has some sort of impact on the environment around us, and the sooner that children learn this lesson, the more sensitive they will be to lightening their footprint as they grow.
This is where Argentinian company “Libro Abrol” comes in. This amazing small publisher has created a children’s book that can be planted into the ground after you’re done reading it. The biodegradable pages are impregnated with native tree seeds that sprout into trees once the book is planted and watered.
The idea behind this ingenious book is to show kids that books come from trees and to empower them to close the production circle by planting new ones once the book is no longer of use to them. Truly a lesson that just keeps on growing!
