A recent survey reveals a significant shift in American attitudes regarding animal experimentation, indicating a strong preference for alternative research methods. Conducted by Morning Consult on September 5, 2024, the poll surveyed 2,205 adults and highlighted a growing consensus against the use of animals in scientific research.
When participants were asked whether the U.S. government should develop a plan to phase out animal experiments, an overwhelming 80% agreed or strongly agreed. A similar trend was observed for other statements, including the prioritization of government funding for non-animal research methods, with about 85% expressing Support. These findings showed little variation across different demographics, including sex, location, age, or education.
Neal Barnard, MD, president of the Physicians Committee, which sponsored the survey, attributed this shift to an increased recognition of animals’ emotional and psychological lives. He noted that this awareness has evolved since the groundbreaking research of Jane Goodall on chimpanzees in Africa. “We now have research technologies that allow us to harmlessly study human beings in ways that were not possible a few decades ago,” Barnard stated. As a result, animal experimentation is perceived as increasingly outdated.
The latest survey reflects a significant change from previous attitudes. A 2018 study by the Pew Research Center indicated that only 47% of Americans supported the use of animals in scientific research, while 52% were opposed. The decline in Support for animal testing appears to be influenced by heightened awareness of laboratory abuses, particularly following recent controversies. Barnard pointed to the Physicians Committee’s 2022 public records lawsuit concerning Elon Musk’s Neuralink experiments on monkeys, which has likely increased public scrutiny of animal testing practices.
