On Christmas evening, a chaotic scene unfolded on New York City‘s Fifth Avenue when a horse-drawn carriage collided with a car during heavy traffic. The incident, occurring around 8 p.m., left both the passengers of the carriage and the horse stranded in the middle of the congested street. Shockingly, the carriage driver abandoned the scene, leaving the horse unattended in a potentially dangerous situation.
Witnesses captured photos showing the aftermath of the collision, where the carriage remained in the street without the driver present. The horse could have bolted at any moment, creating further risks to public safety.
Advocates are calling for immediate action from the New York City Council to address this issue. The proposed Ryder’s Law, or Intro 967, aims to end the use of horse-drawn carriages, citing the inherent dangers and frequent accidents involving these animals. Supporters of the bill argue that incidents like this demonstrate the urgent need to protect both horses and the public from unsafe practices.
The organization that reported the crash to the authorities is awaiting further updates on the condition of the horse involved. In the meantime, New Yorkers are urged to contact the NYC Council Health Committee Chair, Lynn Schulman, to express their concerns. Residents can reach out via email at District29@council.nyc.gov or call (718) 544-8800 and press 0 to leave a message advocating for the passage of Ryder’s Law.
