Mexico’s newly elected president, Claudia Sheinbaum, brings a rich background in climate science to a nation primarily known for its oil production. As the world’s 11th largest oil producer and a significant emitter of greenhouse gases in Latin America, Mexico’s policies under Sheinbaum’s leadership are set to draw global attention.

Sheinbaum’s election is seen as a beacon of hope for environmentalists and international diplomats who have watched Mexico transition from a climate leader to a participant lagging in sustainable practices. The President-elect, previously Mexico City’s mayor, is not only an advocate for the environment but also a seasoned energy engineer who contributed to the 2014 landmark U.N. Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report. This report highlighted the urgent need to combat irreversible damage from greenhouse gases.
Despite her environmental credentials, Sheinbaum’s tenure as mayor was marked by a dual approach; she defended the oil-focused policies of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, while implementing green initiatives such as introducing electric buses and installing solar panels on large infrastructures.
Her $14 billion energy plan promises a shift towards wind, solar, and hydropower to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy sources. Additionally, Sheinbaum aims to enhance public transportation with more electric buses and improve energy efficiency across sectors. However, balancing these ambitious plans with her allegiance to López Obrador’s energy policies—favoring state-run oil and electricity companies—presents a significant challenge.
Mexico’s position as a major oil producer and its reliance on gas and oil infrastructure for energy production are substantial hurdles in reducing its carbon footprint. As president, Sheinbaum’s strategies will need to address the economic and political complexities of transforming Mexico’s energy sector. She pledges clear regulations for private investors in renewables, despite the continuing emphasis on state dominance in the energy market.
The direction Sheinbaum will take could redefine not only Mexico’s energy landscape but also its role in global environmental efforts. Her presidency is anticipated to diverge from her mentor’s staunch nationalist policies, focusing more on environmental sustainability balanced with social justice. As she steps into leadership, the international community and her constituents watch closely, hopeful for a greener future under her guidance.
