San Bernardino, a city located approximately 60 miles from Los Angeles in Southern California, is now home to America’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train. This groundbreaking development introduces the $20 million Zero-Emission Multiple Unit (ZEMU), a hybrid hydrogen fuel cell and battery-operated train that emits only water vapor as a byproduct, setting a new standard in eco-friendly public transportation.

The innovative ZEMU is equipped to travel between Redlands and San Bernardino along the 9-mile Arrow Corridor. Expected to commence operations early next year, it will cater to an estimated 416 daily weekday commuters and 6,433 weekend passengers. This venture is seen as a pioneering step towards adopting clean energy solutions in U.S. rail systems, which have traditionally lagged behind European counterparts in both ridership and technological advancements.
Ray Marquez, president of the San Bernardino County Transit Authority (SBCTA), emphasized the transformative nature of the ZEMU project, highlighting its potential to position the Inland Empire and California as leaders in clean rail technology. The train’s introduction aligns with California’s broader environmental goals, including the state’s ambitious target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2045.
Developed in collaboration with Swiss rail manufacturer Stadler Inc, the ZEMU’s design faced significant challenges, particularly proving that its lightweight aluminum frame could safely share tracks with heavier freight trains. This achievement bypasses the need for costly overhead electrification—a common feature in European rail systems but impractical on many U.S. freight routes.
The launch of the ZEMU is timely, coinciding with preparations for the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, which aims to be a “no-car” event. It also represents a critical proof of concept that could pave the way for broader implementation across more than 500 miles of Southern California’s regional rail system.
Despite its promise, the transition to hydrogen power is not without its drawbacks. Critics point to the inefficiencies in hydrogen production and the significant energy required to extract and convert hydrogen for fuel. Nonetheless, California remains committed to expanding its hydrogen infrastructure through substantial investments. The state’s Alliance for Renewable Clean Hydrogen Energy Systems (Arches) is set to distribute approximately $12.6 billion to Support the integration of hydrogen-powered vehicles and the development of hydrogen production facilities.
This small yet significant step with the ZEMU might just be the start of a larger clean energy revolution in the U.S. rail sector, combining innovation with sustainability to reshape public transportation.
