According to Service Dog Central, there are between 100,000 and 200,000 service dogs in the United States. Many of these dogs help those who are physically disabled or struggle with chronic mental or physical illness. While the number of veterans who have service dogs is difficult to track down, it is safe to say that many of us know a veteran with experience working with a service dog.
The story of Larry, a Vietnam War veteran, and his service dog, Thunder, just goes to show that the relationships that those like Larry have with these empathetic, intelligent and compassionate animals is nothing less than true friendship. The friendships exhibited in stories like theirs can teach us a thing or two about what it means to be a good friend and a decent person, whether human or animal.
