While Didik, the baby orangutan in this video, is incredibly cute, he has an extremely sad story. Little Didik was captured from the wild and sold into the pet trade after his mother was killed by poachers. Poor Didik sustained a gunshot wound in his tiny shoulder during the altercation before he was brutally abandoned in a shop in West Borneo. Thankfully, the local Forestry Department discovered the starving orangutan and contacted International Animal Rescue (IAR) so that poor Didik could get the treatment he needed.

Looking into this orangutan’s eyes, it is clear he has suffered immensely.  According to Dr. Karmele Llano Sanchez, vet and program director of IAR Indonesia,  witnessing the death of his mother was extremely traumatizing for Didik. Much like human children, baby orangutans are entirely dependent on their mothers for the first two years of life. In an attempt to comfort this sweet little one, IAR has given Didik a big fuzzy stuffed animal to cling on to.  Thankfully, he’s starting to get more of an appetite, and soon he will even be able to hold his bottle himself.  We certainly hope he will be fully recovered soon.
