The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust team recently carried out a fantastic rescue mission – this time in the Kirisia forest in Northern Kenya. After a journey from Nairobi, the rescuers found the animal whose life they were about to save – a seriously injured elephant accompanied by her baby.
The mother’s leg was completely shattered by a bullet which made it almost entirely impossible for her to move. Her little calf’s behavior was truly incredible – the baby kept careful vigil of over his mother, as if trying to protect her, keeping close to her at all times. Both the mother and the baby were anesthetized so the rescuers could take a closer look at the injury and help the elephants.
Tragically, it was not possible to save the mother and she had to be euthanized. The baby elephant was driven to the airstrip and – with the help of the locals – loaded onto the plane to be transported to the Nursery at the rescue.
Now the baby elephant lives at the Nursery together with his many new friends, with the priceless care of his caretakers. After the trauma of losing his mother, everybody at the rescue is doing everything in their power to give the little elephant as much love and Support as possible.
