Remember that one time when you were a kid and the older kids on the street set up a half pipe in the street and started doing cool tricks on their skateboards in front of your house? Remember how you got on your Strawberry Shortcake bike and rode up and down the street in front of them, attempting to do tricks on your own – like wheelies? Yeah, that ended in the tragic crashing of your bike into a Pyracantha bush and the questioning look of your mother as you picked the berries out of your hair.
This baby elephant might learn from your childhood humiliation (Oh, that didn’t happen to you? Must have happened to one of our other friends. It most certainly did NOT happen to us, that’s for sure). When interlopers on an African safari came across this little guy and his herd, he suddenly went all wavy ears and mock-charge to get them to go back to where they came from. Then he kinda tripped on his big, adorable, elephant feet and the show was basically over.
By not engaging the elephant and merely observing his behavior in his natural habitat, these safari participants were afforded the chance to see an animal that is sadly becoming a disappearing act. Keeping them out of zoos, safari parks (definitely not the same as an authentic safari) and circuses, as well as, bringing an end to the ivory trade are their best hopes of living natural lives in their own habitat. It’s up to all of us to see that this brave little one gets to keep his swagger for generations to come. But first, he needs to get a handle on his own feet.
