Australia’s lush tropical rainforests — once powerful defenders against Climate change — are now releasing more carbon than they store, according to The Guardian. In a world-first finding published in Nature, scientists discovered that sections of Queensland’s tropical forests have switched from being a carbon sink to a carbon source due to rising temperatures and prolonged dry conditions.
For decades, tropical forests have been the earth’s lungs, absorbing massive amounts of carbon dioxide and locking it away in trees and soil. But data collected over nearly 50 years from around 11,000 trees across Queensland show a worrying reversal. About 25 years ago, the trunks and branches of these rainforests began emitting more carbon than they absorbed — a sign of mass tree die-off and slower regrowth. The roots below ground still store some carbon, but the balance is tipping in the wrong direction.
“This is the first tropical forest of its kind to show this symptom of change,” said lead researcher Dr. Hannah Carle of Western Sydney University. Scientists believe Australia’s warmer, drier tropics may foreshadow what could happen to other rainforests around the world if climate conditions worsen. If similar shifts occur elsewhere, climate models may be underestimating the true speed and scale of Global warming.
The study is a stark reminder that the planet’s natural defenses are not limitless. Forests once thought to be reliable carbon sponges could become climate amplifiers — feeding rather than fighting the crisis. Protecting forests, cutting emissions fast, and shifting toward plant-based, sustainable lifestyles are among the most powerful steps individuals and governments can take to restore balance to the environment.
Now more than ever, choosing habits that help forests thrive — from avoiding products linked to deforestation to supporting rewilding and vegan living — can make a difference for the planet’s health.
