In a significant move towards sustainability, Amazon has announced a major overhaul of its packaging materials across North America, opting for eco-friendly recycled paper in place of traditional plastic air pillows. This initiative marks the company’s most substantial effort in reducing plastic usage in the region, with a commitment to eliminate nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.

As of now, Amazon has successfully transitioned 95% of its plastic packaging to paper alternatives and aims to achieve a full switch by the end of the year. The shift aligns with the company’s broader environmental strategy, which emphasizes minimal packaging use and prioritizes recyclable materials to reduce waste and enhance customer satisfaction.
This change is part of a broader response to long-standing criticism from environmental organizations such as Oceana, which has consistently highlighted Amazon’s reliance on plastic packaging. Matt Littlejohn, Oceana’s senior vice president, acknowledged the progress but emphasized the need for Amazon to continue its efforts toward eliminating single-use plastics throughout its global operations.
Moreover, Amazon’s proactive approach to sustainability has resonated with its investors, many of whom have urged the company to provide clearer strategies for waste reduction. In response, Amazon has disclosed its use of 85,916 metric tons of single-use plastic in 2022, noting an 11.6% decrease from the previous year.
The transition away from plastic began in an automated fulfillment center in Ohio last October, where Amazon was able to refine the paper-filling process. This includes modifying machinery and retraining staff, ensuring a seamless adaptation to the new materials. Christian Garcia, an Amazon employee at the Bakersfield, California fulfillment center, praised the new paper filler for its ease of use and the operational efficiencies it brings.
Additionally, Amazon’s sustainability efforts extend beyond packaging. The company has initiated a campaign to ship products without any additional packaging, achieving a milestone where 11% of all global shipments in 2022 required no supplementary packing materials. Amazon is also exploring advanced technologies in collaboration with AI and robotics firms, as well as with the U.S. Department of Energy, to enhance recycling processes and develop innovative materials.
This packaging transformation by Amazon not only represents a significant stride in reducing environmental impact but also sets a precedent for other companies in the e-commerce sector to follow.
