Our companion animals are so dear to us that we sometimes personify them as our furry, scaly, or maybe even feathery fellow human being. We see them take on humanistic traits and thus, they become a part of the family like rescue dog Zoey and her baby bestie Jasper. In a recent emerging series of portraits by photographer Maija Astikainen, from Helsinki, Finland, we see dogs portray human characteristics.
What started in 2009, turned into a multi-year project to capture the humanly things dogs do.
“I realized that what is the most interesting point about dogs to me, is that how we kind of misinterpret the things they are doing,” Astikainen said.
She’s right. While we might see Fido trying to be “human,” he might actually just being doing whatever he’s doing without much thought to it. Because we can’t communicate with them very well, we, as humans, might over think what animals are thinking. Thus, we might as well misinterpret a lot of things, like how dogs are just like us.
Nonetheless, it’s always fun to try to guess what your pooch is thinking whenever he or she does humanly things, like when sitting upright on an armchair, or lounging in bed. Check out some of Astikainen’s photos from her photography series titled, “One-Dog Policy:”

none of these photos prove anything of the sort. Cute, but they don’t prove anything.
