Activists from In Defense of Animals and Tucson-based animal rights group SPEAK have joined forces once again to protest against the University of Arizona’s College of Medicine for its involvement in extreme animal cruelty. The protest, which took place on Thursday, April 25, marked the third consecutive year of action during World Week for Animal In Laboratories (WWAIL).
The university has come under fire for its continued use of vivisection on animals, including brain-mapping experiments on primates and surgical training procedures on live pigs. These practices have been condemned for causing immense suffering and death to the animals involved.
Brittany Michelson, Campaign Specialist for Captive Animals at In Defense of Animals, expressed outrage at the university’s actions, stating, “We are outraged that the University of Arizona is undertaking extremely cruel, invasive, and archaic experiments on primates and pigs — these tests should be stopped immediately.”
Michelson emphasized that modern, non-animal methods are readily available and should be prioritized over outdated practices. The university has access to advanced simulation technology and alternative testing methods, such as computer modeling and clinical trials, which could replace the need for live animal experimentation.
Despite these alternatives, the University of Arizona has persisted in its use of animals for research purposes. Activists are calling for an end to these practices and urging the university to embrace more ethical and humane methods.
