This story is a combination of a cautionary tale and a tragedy. The former because this is what happens when people allow their animals to breed with no restraint — and don’t get any of their animals fixed — and the latter because ultimately it’s the cats and not the guardian who truly suffer in this situation. This is a story of 30 cats and kittens who were abandoned, living in a desolate home of ruin, feces, and grime.

Chris Poole, also known as Cat Man Chris, was among those rescuing these cats after they got a tip. A proud “crazy cat guy” and obviously quite the lover of cats, little probably could have prepared Poole for what he saw when he entered the horrid house.

There are few things that can describe the hell these cats were living in. It’s fortunate, however, that there were loving, compassionate folks who stepped in and rescued them from their unfortunate state. They were abandoned by their owner sometime last year so the landlord did what they could, providing water and dry food. But, quickly, it became too much to manage, and they needed help.

The rescuers began by taking as many kittens as they could grab, one who was clinging to their life. Right now the animals are all being cared for, headed to better lives, but the work is not over yet. The cats need medical and emotional care after a year — or who knows how long — of isolation and neglect. Fleas are a huge issue for these cats.

Poole, who helped rescue the cats, posted this on his Facebook page, calling for help: “If anyone watching this video has a space like a warehouse that would be suitable for us to use in the Lake Barrington, Cary or Fox River Grove area in Northern IL… PLEASE contact me directly at: coleandmarmalade@gmail.com or message the page, thanks.”

If you’ve got a space and are prepared to care for rescued animals, reach out. A GoFundMe for the animals has already been started and successfully completed, so space is the most important thing right now.
