380 different organizations have all endorsed a draft plan for the United States to address Climate change. That draft has been sent to President-elect Joe Biden. The first step, according to the plan, is to declare a National Climate Emergency.
“Our house is ablaze with a fire fanned by Trump for four years,” said Kassie Siegel, director of the Center for Biological Diversity’s Climate Law Institute in a statement. “There’s no time to lose. Biden must take bold action the moment he steps into the Oval Office, without punting to a dysfunctional Congress. This order is the road map for Biden to be the climate president we need.”
A diverse range of organizations has endorsed the plan. The Center for Biological Diversity is joined by environmental organizations such as the Rainforest Action Network and the Indigenous Environmental Network as well as groups like the Breast Cancer Action Network and the National Family Farm Foundation in endorsing the plan.
The draft includes 12 points of action for the Biden administration to take upon assuming office next month. Those points are as follows:
Biden is expected to re-join the Paris Climate Agreement on his first day in office. The President-elect recently released a statement on his commitment to addressing Climate change.
“I’ll immediately start working with my counterparts around the world to do all that we possibly can, including by convening the leaders of major economies for a climate summit within my first 100 days in office,” Joe Biden said in a statement. “We’ll elevate the incredible work cities, states and businesses have been doing to help reduce emissions and build a cleaner future. We’ll listen to and engage closely with the activists, including young people, who have continued to sound the alarm and demand change from those in power.”
A recent United Nations reported states that the Earth is currently on pace to warm by 3 degrees by the end of the century. The report notes that enough emission reductions could take place to keep the warming under 2 degrees if governments adopt a low-carbon pandemic response, however.
Joe Uehlein, founding president of the Labor Network for Sustainability, says that the draft plan sent to Biden is as much about rebuilding the economy as it is about addressing Climate change.
“This is a jobs plan as much as a climate plan,” Uehlein said. “Biden can address the climate emergency and create thousands of good-paying union jobs in the process. He can’t lose unless he goes back to business as usual.”
