According to a recent study, eating hot dogs can take 36 minutes off of your life. The study cataloged 5,800 foods, ranking them by their disease burden to human life. The results showed that removing 10% of beef and processed foods from one’s diet to replace it with plant-based foods allowed people to gain 48 healthy minutes per day.
The study showed multiple accounts where replacing heavily processed, and meaty foods with plant-based foods enhanced quality of life, adding as much as 26 extra minutes to a healthy person’s life. The study revealed many cases where even very small changes could have either a shortening or elongating effect on a person’s life.
This was yet another study that showed the hidden benefits behind eating a plant-based diet. So many kinds of meat are heavily processed, which makes them even more unhealthy than they originally were.
Olivier Jolliet, professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Michigan Public Health and senior author of the paper, said, “The urgency of dietary changes to improve human health and the environment is clear. Our findings demonstrate that small targeted substitutions offer a feasible and powerful strategy to achieve significant health and environmental benefits without requiring dramatic dietary shifts.”
This new research has also brought the concern for competitive eaters to light, especially those who are competitively eating hot dogs.
