Reebok announced it has designed a vegan running shoe. The plant-based materials that make up the shoe include castor bean, algae and eucalyptus. Dubbed “The Forever Floatride GROW” shoe will be launched in Fall 2020.
Over the summer, the brand launched a Cotton + Corn collection with a shoe made from those materials. The shoe replaces the existing Forever Floatride Energy with castor bean oil, eucalyptus tree, algae and natural rubber in place of traditional sneaker materials. According to a Reebok press release, the midsole is made from castor beans and the upper is made with eucalyptus tree.
The shoe looks sleek, showing a neutral color. It has a white midsole with gum rubber outsole.
Bill McInnis, Vice President, Reebok Future said of the shoe and Reebok’s sustainable innovation, “With Forever Floatride GROW, we’re replacing oil-based plastic with plants. The biggest challenge in making a shoe like this was developing plant-based materials that could meet the high performance needs of runners. During the three years we spent developing this product, we heard loud and clear that the idea of a plant-based running shoe resonates strongly with serious runners. But those same runners felt just as emphatically that they would never compromise on performance. The Forever Floatride GROW is the result. Plant-based performance – with no compromise.”
Fashion is a notoriously polluting industry. Traditional shoes use plastics and petroleum-based ingredients for shoe performance.
